was founded in March 1982 in Birmingham, Alabama by Mr. John D. Carr, Jr. and Mr. John C. Young. John Carr’s expertise is in the field of Geology and had worked with Combustion Engineering in the year 1969 – 1975. He was involved in sales, installation and supervision both inland and overseas. He has over 47 years of experience in development, production and sales of refractory specialty products. He personally supervised the installation of refractories/specialty insulation material for major projects in almost all types of industries in and outside the United Stated and extended consulting work and product development.
Coastal co-founder Mr. John Young (1927-2014) was a graduate of Missouri School of Mins with a degree in Ceramic Engineering. He had over 60 years of experience in the field of refractory research, product development and quality control.
Coastal services are concentrated in developing Refractories that are tailored for a specific industry, that will enable a product to have maximum tolerance in resisting heat; resisting physical wear and tear and withstand various chemical changes that may occur due to exposure to high temperatures.
In 1993 Coastal Consulting dedicated most of its time in toll manufacturing arrangements, providing raw or semi-finished goods to some companies with equipment and giving them a contracted manufacturing process for their needed materials to be carried/distributed.
Coastal also provides consulting services to refractory manufacturers in production methods and formulations of their mixes. They also impart installers/contractors with installation recommendations, technical know-how, supervision and field inspections.
Over the years, Coastal has shared its specialty outside the US and has gone as far as the Pacific Region doing some consulting and toll manufacturing work in Indonesia, India and the Philippines.
In November 1994, Coastal Refractories, Inc. (now known as Coastal Consulting & Refractories) entered into an agreement with Assistco Energy & Industrial Corporation, Philippines for a Transfer of the technical know-how in producing refractories such as plastic and ramming mixes, gun mixes, standard and low cement castables, wet and dry bonding mortars, low cement and no-cement castables. It includes supervision, technical support and an actual field demonstration and/or seminars. This Agreement continues and is being extended every 4 years and the latest of which is up to year 2074.
